Kalibiru – Eco-Adventure and Stunning Menoreh Hill Views

Kalibiru, or Kalibiru Tourism Village, is an eco-tourism destination located in the Menoreh Hills, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, around 450 meters above sea level. Once a degraded protected forest due to illegal logging, the area has been successfully revived by the local community since 2008 and is now one of Yogyakarta’s most popular nature attractions.

Scenic Beauty & Views

Kalibiru offers breathtaking panoramas of pine forests, the Menoreh Hills, and the beautiful Sermo Reservoir visible from its viewing platforms. On a clear day, you can even spot the waves of the southern coast in the distance. The fresh mountain air and peaceful atmosphere make it a perfect place to refresh both body and mind.

Activities & Attractions

  • Trekking & Hiking: Several trekking routes are available, ranging from 1.5 km up to 7 km, offering both challenges and rewarding scenic views.

  • Photo Spots & Viewing Platforms: Unique platforms such as circular decks, tree houses, “love-shaped” stages, and the famous photo spots overlooking Sermo Reservoir—perfect for Instagram-worthy shots.

  • Adventure Games & Zip-Lining: Activities such as zip-lining, rope bridges, and flying fox rides (6–7 meters above ground) add a dose of adrenaline to your visit.

Kalibiru provides complete facilities including parking areas, prayer rooms, restrooms, cafes, homestays, and even a meeting hall in a traditional joglo pavilion. Homestays are affordable, with prices starting from around IDR 150,000 per night.

Entrance Fee & Opening Hours

  • Entrance Ticket: Around IDR 5,000–10,000 per person. Additional fees apply for parking (motorbike IDR 2,000, car IDR 5,000) and photo spots or rides (IDR 10,000–35,000).

Local Value & Current Challenges

Kalibiru is more than just a nature park; it’s a model of community empowerment. Local residents, youth, and village leaders work hand in hand to manage and preserve it. However, after the pandemic, visitor numbers dropped significantly compared to its peak years, and the community is working to revive its former popularity.
